The absolutely best recipe I've made in the slow cooker turned out to be just using Richard Blais's Pastrami Brisket recipe (with Coriander, Black Pepper, and Brown Sugar and yellow mustard) in the slow cooker..... and I didn't have to wrap it in aluminum foil.......
It was wonderful and it has me constantly keeping an eye open for small briskets on sale..

I had a programmable slow cooker with a countdown timer......It died for the second time in two an a half years. So I've said never again and opted for the old fashioned kind with low, high and keep warm manual functions.

Separately I've gotten a Crock-Pot SP100 Smart-Part Module, White available on ebay and can be plugged into any slow cooker to automatically switch it to keep warm after the cooking is done.......

Also, as a family of one I'm finding the 1 1/2 quart oval very handy and the three quart oval slow cookers more than sufficient for most cooking.

Yesterday I made the Hoisin beef stew from a Whole Foods Recipe.. I only used half the Hoisin and added sliced shitake mushrooms and some soaking liquid. Since I used a bit more liquid so, I used minute tapioca to thicken. Had it with a side of sauteed baby bok choy.
Served with rice. I'm thinking I'll the leftovers over egg noodles. it had lots of gravy..... Easy meal.....

I choose between the Whole Food Recipe and this one from Epicurious which sounds delicious and perfect for slow cooker adaption.

I have the Cuisinart PSC-350 3-1/2-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker. I find it an ideal size for one or two people. It is also oval shaped which is very convenient for odd shaped
pieces of meat.
It also has a simmer setting which is unusual. I like that it has a keep warm feature that stays on for 8 hours which is longer than any of the other brands I have seen. It has a timer that can be set for cooking up to twenty four hours.

I have found it a perfect size for my household of one, enough for a meal and some leftovers for the next day.
As for cleaning, it's very easy to handle with the stoneware liner which easily fits in my small sink. I've also slipped it into the dishwasher.

There is no conversion solving for this problem, but, I'm finding quite an annoyance trying to figure out for example: How many stalks of celery in 11 oz (300 grams), 14 oz of potatoes? 5 ounces of shitakes are how many? I am finding this a problem while shopping for ingredients, as well as cooking.
I'm used to taking out a scale for baking, but this seems unnecessarily complicated for a weeknight dinner.

Just curious as to why Nigella's Roll recipe was used rather than RLB's since she used her topping? I'd like to try making the Crunch rolls. Is the Nigella recipe better?

I always loved the Congee I'd get in Chinese restaurants especially the ginger and chicken with the century eggs, but mine never tasted nearly as good or smooth.
Finally discovered the major reason why...... I was using Basmati rice and it never broke down.
I switched to Sushi rice------what a difference in the texture......(Also a quick rinse, I add some oil and salt and let it sit for a few hours in the crock pot before adding boiling liquid to cook overnight).

I've never had it with crab, but I do add a few dried scallops (conpoy), soaked and shredded which really adds that umami flavor.

I opted for an upright freezer, because, I am disabled and only have the use of one arm. I really don't have the stamina to rudder around in a chest. I cook for one and find the freezer indipensable making additional servings when I have the energy.
I have also found the Foodsaver indispensable for freezer portions and keeping away freezer burn when I buy in quantity.
