Thanks Faith! If they haven't already, I think the Kitchn needs to do a post on broiler tips and tricks. Especially for those of us who have unsophisticated apartment kitchens, and just have "Broil" as a setting on our (not so great) ovens. I will definitely adjust the racks to keep the meat closer to the broiling element.

I just tried Alton's method the other night (500 degree oven) and am curious as to the main difference the broiling (versus baking) will have. Alton's method was extremely smoky (not a bad thing, just wasn't prepared) - should I expect the same here?

Definitely cup-to-cup! It's the way to go. Also, in India they pour tea out into the saucer and slurp from the saucer. Not ideal in public, but works great at home!

LOVE scrambled eggs, hate omlettes. Hence, soft, fluffy, milky eggs are key. I can't stand that leathery bottom on omlettes. Pretty much cook mine the same way, but always use a little milk to get them perfectly fluffy.

I have been wanting a dress form for about 2 years now! Looking for the right one for scarves, necklaces, etc. Love it.

Definitely grate the ginger instead of mincing - and graters come in all sizes and widths, so you can pretty close to minced ginger. Coming from an Indian family that cooks Indian food most night, grating ginger (and using a mortar and pestle for garlic) is the only way to go!

You don't have to store ghee in the fridge. My family is of Indian origin, and we make this stuff at home (by melting/clarifying butter for hours, and then waiting for it to harden) and we store it in a big jar for months in the cupboard. I don't recommend making it - it smells gross!

Wow is this really LA? It looks like SF! Great place/neighborhood.

Was feeling sheepish thinking I didn't know how those magical free-standing tubs would drain. Now I realize the plumbing is not shown.

If it's in the lease that adding people costs $$, than yes, what they are doing is legal. If not, contact your local housing authority. Landlords always get freaked out when the housing authority comes a-knockin'.

VENICE! Definitely Venice. Born in LA, I moved to NYC after college and fell in love with the city. I forced myself to move back to LA to give it a chance, since my parents are still out here. After living in Hell's Kitchen and Gramercy, the only neighborhood I could stomach was Venice. And it's on the beach - which is something you don't get in NYC!

If you live in Venice, live as close to Abbot Kinney as possible, and make sure you get a parking spot. Parking isn't too bad, but gets impossible in the summer months.

Venice is cute, charming, and actually has soul/personality which I think a lot of neighborhoods in LA don't have. In fact. most of the neighborhoods aren't even "neighborhoods" in the true NYC sense.

I'm moving back to NYC the first chance I get, because despite how awesome Venice is, I'm just a NYC girl at heart -but you should definitely give Venice a chance!

Any thoughts on the best way to string a few of these together vertically? I just hate those Ikea light wires - they are so fat and unruly, and I'm not sure what the best way is to light multiple shades strung together vertically - multiple cord systems??

It's actually by artist Jay Kelly, and was the visual he designed for the 2008 AK Street Festival this year, on Sept 28, 2008. I only know because I bought a poster print and have been meaning to hang it up for months!

I think I prefer the look of slanted, but often that method covers up the majority of the headboard which may be worth displaying.

I live in Venice, and I fear my desire for a safe neighborhood will be at the cost of culture-numbing gentrification. I personally hope there can be a balance!

Ikea makes a pretty similar chair in a basic beech wood that you could paint yourself. A cheaper, DIY alternative to the DWR option...

I actually enjoy the idea of a small tv in the bathroom to watch while enjoying a nice long bath. The coolest bathroom technology I've seen was at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge, MA, which had a hidden TV inside the mirror. A little screen magically appears behind the mirrored glass at the touch of a button - turn it off, and it is like it was never there. Seems like a classy way to have technology in the bathroom.

I loved this paint - it didn't even take a full 2 coats and no primer. Low paint "emissions", blends into itself so you don't without having to worry about splotches, and dries fast. I bought two gallons in a matte finish from a Benjamin Moore store in Manhattan, and couldn't have been happier. I do, however, wish there was some innovation in paint naps/rollers/brushes to ease the strain on my arms!

I love my Hopen bed too! I had to settle for a Ramberg a few beds ago as my tiny room in NYC had no room for the Hopen. Since then, I have had a Hopen in NYC and one here in LA. There is just something about the headboard I really like (and the price as well.)
