Wow! There are a lot of people who have a lot of time to clean up and supervise their children all the time (or really mellow kids)!! I think one or two cupboards for exploring is reasonable but for some busy kiddos they could have an entire room dismantled in minutes. I would like to point out it is recommended that chemicals aren't placed up high because of accidentally spilling them on yourself when you take them down. I have used the long-U-shaped ones that connect the handles together (and for the others I have used the drilled kind--not helpful I know). Unfortunately those don't work on cupboards without handles or single doors. I also place furniture in front of things like our desk drawers. I would recommend gating/fencing off the kitchen or using a playard.

I'm a little torn on the blanket as a gift. Even if it's not the exact same blanket--everyone loves to give blankets. I'm a lot less likely to use the beautiful handmade quilts and afghans than the practical lightweight lame-o flannel ones. I say this because we were blessed with incredibly sweet friends who gave our daughter 5 (or more) beautiful and unique blankets and quilts. We have used them as a place for her to play on the carpet but she only stayed put for a few months. Now she roll, scoots and 'hops' away from the blankets. I do treasure them. Gift givers remember the registry is boring but practical and all the things that they will need and use :)

My dad did just the plywood. It probably wasn't as cute as theirs but from the curb you can't really tell the difference. It really does add charm.

My brother's Dutch host mom ironed everything when it was partially dry because they didn't have a dryer and it softened things up. He HATED that she ironed his undies :)

I know that some carpets melt-I've done it. When I was about 8 I was too lazy to pull out the ironing board and decided to iron something on my bedroom floor. I noticed a dark, shiny spot in the carpet later that day. Upon touching the carpet I realized that the fibers had hardened and were become fused together. Always test first.

Simple way to try on a color with nearly zero technology skills. Open the picture up in a PCs "Paint" program (it's still there! Look under "Accessories). Draw a rectangle over the door and fill it in with any color you want to try.

For the record...furniture doesn't pick up bed bugs from sitting outdoors. The bedbugs live in the upholstered furniture. They feed on the people who use the furniture...kind of like lice. I love picking up furniture by the dumpsters but stick to hard furniture (wood-like substances). It's just not worth having to deal with an infestation of my own furniture.

5 Tips for Setting Up Home Without Spending A Dime

I have two nylon fabric curtains that I've traded off for about 6-8 years. I admit that I am not the cleanest person so the pink molds develops before I wash them. I have had to soak and scrub them several times. They lasted several years before they started to allow water through (severely). I use a re waterproofing wash from REI meant for outdoor gear. It's pretty spendy though. I am going to buy a new curtain this week actually.

Everyone that has removed items from a hotel more than once knows that they don't always catch you and charge you. If they were caught the first time they probably wouldn't have stolen the next time. Towels, robes, etc. are not supposed to be included in the price of the hotel--but as mentioned the prices go up for everyone because of theft. You can't teach a child morals if you don't have them. You have to live an upright life too. Come on people!

I agree that a curtain looks temporary and would be noisier. I also think that sliding doors are less convenient than the doors you have. I am a visual person and need to be able to see everything--sliders hide. They also run off the track all the time.

So why didn't they just close the laptop?

For desktops...the screensaver would turn on and ruin the effect.

Cute trick. I'm impressed that they got the image the right size.

I agree that the table has to be lower...it is uncomfortable...speaking from experience. I have dinner parties that are more casual. It's a little tricky balancing plates on laps etc. but if there's a place for the glasses (small tables, coffee tables etc) and the company's right it's still a lot of fun to have a party without a dining table.

Actually nude art was considered pornography before there were cameras too. Besides photography is an art too. So if it's called porn when it's a photo why isn't it porn in another medium? We still live in a society where we wear clothing in public (most everywhere). Whether we consider ourselves 'sophisticated' or think that we should have grown up or beyond that is not the point. If a person had pornographic photographs on their walls how would you feel about that? Just because it's an artistic rendering doesn't really change that it is an image of a naked being and nakedness evokes discomfort and/or arousal because of the social norms of the society in which we live.

I know it's been said but I'll mention it again. Outside.
I am the moron who set off the smoke alarm in the middle of winter (at 2 a.m---I worked late ok!) by trying to BBQ with a gas grill in the house. Hey! The chicken was probably on it's way out if I didn't cook it up. Thank God the battery was in the alarm. It saved my family the expense of a funeral and embarassment of explaining how dumb I was (am?).
